Last Light   by Andy McNab

This is the first time I've read one of McNab's books, and what a blast it is! It is a really suspenseful page turner. It can be said that the action is described with military precision, but Andy also exposes the thinking and approach of special services soldiers to difficult and dangerous situations.

The action takes place in the South American jungle, and from reading this book you get the distinct impression that the author has been there and done that.

The language is neither fluid nor elegant, but it is the unmistakeable voice of a man steeped in military discipline, and is efficient and immediate especially in the exposition of the less savoury aspects of special services work.

While the details are the most interesting part of the book, the overall story line is also very strong. For the most part you have the impression that everything is planned, but then the story twists and turns away from the straight and narrow at unexpected moments, imbuing ultra-realism into the plot. There are times when you feel like you are immersed directly in the dangerous circumstances that the hero faces. Utterly brilliant. I'll definitely be reading more of this man!
