There is a young lady called Tessa Derbyfield who lives a lowly (but happy) life working in the fields, in the shadow of the big house on the hill that belongs to the d'Urberville family. Guess what? The similar sounding names are no coincidence, and it turns out that Tess is descended from the higher family, as is entitled to inherit some of its fortune (I think this is where the book goes, but it's years since I read it and I may be in error). It's kinda predictable (and the title somewhat gives the whole thing away), but it's well told and a tidy little story. |
