Ivanhoe   by Sir Walter Scott

I wish I had read this when I was fourteen years old! It is the only book of chivalrous knights I have ever read, and is a wonderful blast through the middle England of Robin Hood and the Black Knight. It seems to touch on all aspects of life in that period, even including a sickening scene which takes place in a torture chamber in the dungeons of a castle - a scene I wouldn't want removed as it is a reminder how cruel the human species has been in the past, and in places no doubt still is today.

If this book can't kindle the literary fires of young boys, nothing will!
