The Mayor of Casterbridge   by Thomas Hardy

Read: 1970-01-01 Reviewed: 2004-03-13
Re-read factor:
Quite a funny idea this: a sailor gets somewhat inebriated and accidentally sells his wife. They go their separate ways. Some years later the ex-wife is visiting Casterbridge with her new husband, and it turns out by some quirk of fortune that her ex is now mayor. After some toing and froing involving a little political and business intrigue, they eventually get back together.

It's a good read, but strangely subdued after the main events have taken place early on in the book (or at least the reader's thirst for novelty wanes as the initial passages pass).
